What is something that you want to fix in your industry?
I think dance is so incredible in so many ways. It has had a major role in my life and seeing it take on that same role in my students lives is great to see. Specifically, it was a great form of exercise for me growing up. Seeing my students leave class sweaty and with red cheeks always makes me smile! Dance is also an amazing way for students to leave their problems behind and just enjoy themselves for an hour or two, or even use dance to help them deal with their problems. It’s an excellent way for them to express themselves and I love that.
What do you do at DDA?
I teach the competitive junior jazz classes, as well as the competitive contemporary and lyrical. I also am involved with the instagram page which is super fun!
Did you have a favorite style of dance growing up?
My favorite style of dance growing up was tap but I also really loved jazz.
Tell us about your credentials/past experience for working in your position!
This is my 4th year at DDA. I was trained at Lecky School of Dancing for 17 years in styles including jazz, ballet, tap, musical theatre, hip hop, and pointe. I also completed all of my cecchetti grade exams. When I was younger, I was in Alberta Ballet’s The Nutcracker and I was a dancing Santa in The Singing Christmas Tree. I am currently completing my bachelor of education at the University of Alberta! I love learning different things in my classes at school that I can implement into my classes at the studio.
What do you like about working at DDA?
I love the family at DDA. The students, staff, and parents at our studio all care for each other and look out for each other and it’s amazing to see. We’re so used to seeing shows like Dance Mom’s where there is so much drama between everybody but at DDA, everybody is on the same team. It makes it so much easier as a teacher when everybody is supporting each other.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
A fun fact about me is that I am graduating University this year from the Faculty of Education.
Where do we find you when you are not working?
When I’m not working I’m usually at school! Either on campus or in practicum, I am super busy with studying and getting all my schoolwork done. When I have a break from all of that, I like to hang out with my friends or watch Netflix. I am currently trying to finish all 16 seasons of Greys Anatomy and also love watching Mr. D!
Your advice to younger dancers?
My advice to younger dancers is to never let success get to your head and never let failure get to your heart.
